“Sotto Voice” Art Exhibition Visuals

Personal Project, 2022
This project develops the visual identity for the solo exhibition of Chinese artist Shuling Guo at Fou Gallery in Brooklyn.
Titled Sotto Voice, the exhibition draws from the Italian word “sotto”—meaning beneath or under—as a conceptual entry point into the artist’s quiet, introspective narrative. Rooted in her journey at sea, the work captures subtle atmospheric shifts and the restrained rhythms of nature.
The visual system translates Guo’s colored-pencil practice into a series of diffused gradient forms, preserving its softness while introducing a more contemporary visual language. Fluid transitions and submerged color fields evoke a sense of depth and suspension, mirroring the experience of drifting between surface and undercurrent.
Rather than directly representing nature, the identity abstracts it—constructing a cooler, more distant aesthetic that invites viewers to reconsider their emotional and sensory relationship with the natural world.
